CAMPANHA

THE PANDEMIC IMPOSED BY THE CORONAVIRUS BRINGS CHALLENGES IN MANY DIMENSIONS OF our LIVES. IN THE CASE OF REDES DA MARÉ, WHICH HAS A DIRECT contact WITH THE POPULATION, WE UNDERSTAND THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO RESPOND TO THE DEMANDS OF THE MOST VULNERABLE RESIDENTS IN THE PANDEMIC PERIOD. WE DIVIDED the work ON THREE FRONTS:

FOOD SECURITY

We perceive a large number of families that are in continuous need for food and personal hygiene and cleaning items.

:: Suggested action: delivery of food baskets and personal hygiene and cleaning kits to a starting number of 6 thousand families who need this urgent help. We will identify these families from our database, created in the first stage of the campaign, following criteria of greatest need, such as families without income, who pay rent, without the aid of social benefits, with children, elderly and / or disabled person at home. The first basket delivery is scheduled to take place on March 28.

RIGHT TO EDUCATION

With the pandemic, the vast majority of children and adolescents in Maré were unable to study, mainly because they do not have access to computers or internet access, which has been increasing social inequality at an accelerated rate.

:: Suggested action: purchase of equipment (computers, phones and / or tablets) and internet data package to be made available, in terms of use, during the school year, to 1,000 students distributed in the 16 favelas of Maré.

HEALTH CARE

We’ve managed, with five more partners, to create the project “Health Connection: keeping an eye on Corona”. Currently, we have three services available, free of charge, to residents of Maré, with: testing for covid-19; telemedicine, with consultations by doctors and psychologists; and support for safe isolation. We now need to intensify individual protection actions by health agents and the local population and provide spaces for hand hygiene and public spaces, actions that require resources for the purchase of equipment.

:: Suggested action:
• Support to health units with the donation of personal protective equipment to ensure safe care for professionals and the population, since the Health Units are operating in a precarious manner. We are demanding it to the government and the answer will come, but unfortunately, it will take time.
• Free distribution of alcohol and masks to the population of Maré;
• Supply of alcohol totems in the 16 residents' associations and other local organizations.
• Installation of sinks in public spaces for hand hygiene;
• Cleaning of shops, churches and agglomeration spaces with a hospital disinfectant product for fixed surfaces.

Hunger is an urgent and rapid demand in the slums and peripheries in this cruel moment of the pandemic! Therefore, we started a second phase of the campaign ‘Maré says NO to Coronavirus’. We have identified in our database, among more than 18 thousand families registered, those that are having more difficulties in guaranteeing food security. We are carrying out specific actions, distributing baskets that we were able to mobilize with the help of supporters. The challenge is huge, but we will continue to fight against Covid-19 together with the residents of Maré. If you can, support our work, access and continue to follow our website and social networks to find out how we are battling the impacts of the virus in Maré!

What we did last year:

PHASE 1 of the CAMPAIGN /2020

All the actions of the campaign ‘Maré says NO to Coronavirus’ are intrinsically related to the work methodology of Redes da Maré. These are organized around six fronts that we consider essential in our historical work with the population of the 16 favelas of Maré: Food security, Homeless care, Income generation for women, Health care and prevention, Production and dissemination of information and safe content and support to local artists.

Maré says NO to coronavirus campaign

Redes da Maré started in March the campaign Maré says NO to Coronavirus, aimed at the population of the 16 slums of Maré. With the support of a network of partnerships, this initiative seeks to face the humanitarian crisis caused by the virus. The campaign is organized on the following fronts:

FOOD SECURITY

Delivery of food baskets and cleaning kits, as well as cards with money for food for the poorest families in the 16 favelas of Maré and/or for those who are in a situation of greater social vulnerability. Initially, for the families identified by Census Maré and by indications from local partners and, afterward, through the WhatsApp channel, ‘Eyes on Corona!’.

Homeless care

Production and distribution of 300 daily hot meals for the homeless, primarily from the crack use scene, which is located at Flavia Farnese Street, in Parque Maré, and at Avenida Brasil, in Parque União. Forty of the meals are delivered at home for sick people, unable to cook their own meal, and another 50, are donated to the ‘Consultório na Rua’, of the Municipal Health Secretariat.

INCOME FOR WOMEN ON TWO FRONTS

A - 26 cookers from the project ‘Flavors of Maré’, who are preparing the hot meals;

B - 54 seamstresses who are producing masks to be distributed to the population of the 16 favelas of Maré. They all lost their income in this period of crisis. SEE MORE»

HEALTH CARE AND PREVENTION

A. Collection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - for distribution to professionals working in the seven Basic Health Units, in the three Psychosocial Care Centers, in the Maré Emergency Unit (UPA Maré) and Consultório de Rua.

B. “Eyes on Corona!” - Daily online service to accommodate demands related to health issues, violations and doubts on how to access rights. In the case of people who report possible contamination by the Coronavirus, we monitor the families to guide them on which public services can be accessed. The contact is made by email and the reception is conducted, by WhatsApp, by lawyers, psychologists and social workers. Residents should send their name, telephone and situation via e-mail at marededireitos@redesdamare.org.br.

C. Disinfection of the streets of Maré - In partnership with Comlurb and Residents’ Associations of Maré, the action focus on the application of a protective film that cleans and keeps the floor protected against the spread of the Coronavirus. The initiative will cover the nearly 1,000 streets, alleys and lanes of Maré and also has 30 residents who are being paid to work on this front of the campaign, which began in June.

PRODUCTION AND DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION AND SAFE CONTENT

“Watch out for corona!- Communication and prevention actions directed to the residents of the 16 favelas of Maré and neighboring communities, about the Coronavirus, in partnership with Fiocruz, with verified information by safe sources and production of daily contents. We also observe the situation, impacts and advance of the virus in Maré. These contents have been used in texts, interviews, podcasts, posters, social networks, newspaper, and many other medias, focusing on approaching the favela and peripheries public. SEE MORE»
