Combining theory and practice, the Views of Maré Film School (Escola de Cinema Olhares da Maré - ECOM) of the Redes da Maré has a mission to produce more systematic audio-visual work in public spaces, encouraging the production of new narratives of self-representation by residents of the favela, with a focus on the memory, culture and identity of this region. The school, created in 2014, is a space for exploring different technical and artistic processes of audio-visual production, designed for young people and adults of the Maré. The workshops – which have already been attended by around 200 people – include the study and practice of documentary film-making, photography, the preparation of actors, production and editing, and the making of music videos and fictional short films. These activities have given rise to a series of productions that have been exhibited on screens at festivals, shows and events, including outside of Brazil.
The relationship with the Maré region is built on mobile film screenings, a film festival, shows, and the production of audio-visual material about the projects and activities of Redes da Maré themselves.
In 2017, the Filma Maré / Film Maré project was initiated, which, in the course of 2018, will select a screenwriter resident in the Maré to take part in a three-month exchange at the University of California (UCLA-USA), in the United States. The choice will be made based on a competition for screenplays about the region. The project is the result of a partnership between Redes da Maré and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulate General of Brazil in Los Angeles, UCLA Extension and Rede Globo.
