Thought up by diverse women, the WOW Festival aims to provide reflection on feminist issues, promote debate, connection between different women and realities, celebrate women's achievements, and exalt the progress they have been making, whether collectively or individually. WOW believes in the power of this union and moves to make the female universe conquer more and more spaces.
In 2021, the WOW Festival decided to broaden the range of information for its audience, resulting in the creation of another communication channel: the WOW magazine. The purpose of the magazine is to bring even more feminist topics, reflections, and in-depth discussions. See the editions:
The third edition of WOW magazine - special edition ECOAR - brought debates on the main themes taken to the Festival of Activism to Combat Sexual Violence, with speakers and specialists who debated on this reflective day, with more than 12 hours of programming.
The magazine starts with the struggle of indigenous women and a historic march led by them in September. We also explore music and literature, with powerful interviews with singer Linn da Quebrada and writer Bianca Sueli, author of the first biography of Sueli Carneiro. You will also learn about menstrual poverty, which affects thousands of menstruating people in Brazil.
"What is it like to be a mother in the favela? "The first edition of the WOW magazine spoke with friends and weavers from Redes da Maré, Bruna da Silva, Irone Santiago, and Cláudia Maria Oliveira. United by their pain, they posed for a unique photoshoot for the magazine and talked about their struggles, lives, activism, and dreams.
It is inspired by the Shameless! Festival, a one-day event that brought together activism and art in 2021, in London, to confront and change attitudes towards sexual violence, share ideas and imagine a world free from rape. Shameless! was created in collaboration by the SHaME project at the University of Birkbeck and WOW - Women of the World. The first edition of the festival in Brazil took place in Rio de Janeiro in September 2022 at MAR, produced by Redes da Maré.
The first Girls International Day took place in 2012. In the program, girl leaders discussed topics such as racism, pandemic, and education. To close the day's activities, an amazing show with MC Soffia took place. The event, curated by Redes da Maré, was broadcast on the WOW’s YouTube channel and Facebook.
