PROJECT

Green Maré aims to contribute to the fight for environmental justice and build an agenda that guides environmental issues in Maré as a basic right of the population, acting in the following ways:

Research

Gather data and contribute to Maré's socio-environmental diagnoses.

Articulation

Articulate with public bodies, partners and local organizations.

Mobilization

Create forms of engagement for different profiles of residents regarding environmental issues.

Interventions

Transform public spaces with nature-based solutions such as rain gardens, tree planting, composting.

Training

Contribute to the formation of new protagonists in the territory and that these new actors act in the fight for environmental justice.

Maré is located between the three main roads of the city and has few green areas, which contributes to the formation of "heat islands", which are characterized by high temperatures and air pollution. It also has a history of struggles for basic services, such as adequate sanitation involving sewage treatment, clean piped water and effective garbage collection. This situation deteriorates the quality of life and negatively impacts the health of its residents. It is our objective to develop and support actions that contribute to the fight for these rights.

MAIN ACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

#Climão Campaign: We need to talk about climate change in the favela

The campaign was born in 2020, with a call for employees to build socio-environmental mobilization experiences and communicate the effects of climate change that impact residents of the territory. The proposal is to reflect on the consequences of the climate crisis, seeking to guarantee environmental justice and the socio-environmental rights for populations in slums and to create tools to face the problem. A series of communication materials, articles and characters were produced to address the environmental issue in an attractive way and disseminate this theme for all ages. See all the campaign production here.

According to the Coppe/UFRJ document on strategies for adapting to climate change in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the region where the 16 favelas of Maré are located is very prone to flooding and high temperatures. Climate change poses a high risk for the development of pandemics, such as covid-19. Therefore, it is an urgent matter that needs to be addressed.

#Maré Starts Here

Mobilization actions and artistic intervention with the people of Mare, especially children and adolescents, who call attention to the disposal of garbage, as well as to environmental violence, characterized by environmental racism, such as the recurrence of clogging of drains, demonstrating the absence of public policies. Its first edition was held during the week of the 1st National Congress Talking About Public Security in Maré. All actions are publicized on the organization's social networks and the materials are consolidated on our website and social networks.

#Breathe Maré

Is a project that aims to build a diagnosis of air quality, identify heat islands and green areas, observing how these indicators impact the health of residents of the 16 slums in Maré. After the construction of this diagnosis, it is intended to carry out an environmental intervention in the public space of a pedagogical nature, whose objective is to point out solutions to problems that will be identified throughout the project. #Maré Sanitation Letter

In 2019, Redes da Maré teamed up with data_labe and Casa Fluminense to produce the 2020 Maré Sanitation Letter, in partnership with residents, researchers and environmental activists from the 16 favelas of Maré. Several actions and proposals for public policies were built, which can be seen here. The second edition of the letter was produced at the V Maré Sanitation Meeting (08/27/22). on the website: “Publicações”Did you see garbage or sewage on the street? Maré says NO to coronavirus’

Since ‘Maré says NO to coronavirus’, our staff started to assume the demands arising from the campaign as a priority in their routine. The team from the Urban and Socio-Environmental Rights axis has been working on different front lines, such as distributing food baskets, digitalizing deliveries, assisting the public online and other day-to-day tasks.
