PROJECT

Given the historical fact that the transition from the 5th to the 6th grade of Elementary School is one of the critical moments of school dropout, the 6th Grade Preparatory Course aims to expand the conditions of children living in Maré to participate in the selection processes for the most qualified public schools in Rio de Janeiro, such as Colégio Pedro II, Faetec and CAp UFRJ.

In this way, the project reinforces and complements the education received in schools located in the communities of Maré, helping students to continue attending regular schools – one of the basic conditions for students to enter and remain in the project. In addition, it works on the models of tests applied in the selections, as a way of bringing families closer to these processes, both in terms of content and conditions for participation.

The Preparatory work also aims to improve the quality of school performance in the initial grades of Elementary School and also to strengthen the relationship of children and their families with the school. At the beginning of each school year, children in the 5th year who are enrolled for the Preparatory Course and their families spend time with the project team.

HOW DOES IT HAPPENS?

• Program: Portuguese and Mathematics classes take place after school hours, from Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, there are classes of Education in Citizenship, Environmental Education, or even encounters with the social team of the project to carry out recreational activities, in which students' day-to-day matters are discussed through games, movies and dynamics. In these classes, in addition to the integrated work with other disciplines, topics that cross the students' daily lives are discussed, such as politics, gender equality, racism, violence and sustainability.

• Meetings outside the classroom: in order to expand the cultural and social perspectives of the students, external activities, institutional visits, participation in events and Reading Club - held in the Maria Clara Machado reading room, of the Escritor Lima Barreto Popular Library - are carried out. In addition to computer classes, taking place weekly at the Computer Laboratory in partnership with the Connecting project.

• Approximation with the families and guardians of the students: they take place through monthly meetings of guardians with the coordination of the project and with the social team (composed of a psychologist and a social worker), seeking to facilitate dialogue and bond with the project, through involvement in the process of training and learning of students. In this period of pandemic, the link with families was maintained through the WhatsApp group, where the coordination, social team and educators exchange information, guide and support for the guardians.

Afternoon of activities led by the project coordinator and social worker, with the aim of recognizing common aspects among students, as well as differences, resulting in a conversation about respect for others and empathy.

The project, which annually benefits an average of 25 children aged between 10 and 12, has a class in the Redes da Maré building (R. Sargento Silva Nunes, 1012), from Monday to Friday, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. (See map »)

Due to the pandemic, activities with students were carried out in a hybrid way, combining virtual classes twice a week and face-to-face classes three times. In addition, through a group with students and guardians, the children answered questions with the teachers about the proposed contents and exercises. As of 2022, the project has fully returned to face-to-face mode, but its configuration may change due to the resurgence of the pandemic.

HOW DID THE PREPARATORY REINVENTED ITSELF IN THE PANDEMIC?

Over the years, and especially with the covid-19 pandemic, the team realized the importance and need to invest even more in access to education for children in Maré.

From the difficulties faced by students, such as the dynamics of social isolation, apprehension, access to content, passing through the difficulties of access to the internet and quality of service, which, due to its instability, ends up being a major obstacle to the participation of students in virtual activities, the Preparatory Course was redesigned and started to develop strategies aimed at students' access to education.

The project enhances the reinforcement of the content offered by the schools, with the team of educators helping, clarifying doubts and strengthening the content through lists of exercises, as a way of minimizing the lag in teaching caused by the pandemic, always prioritizing maintaining the link with the students and their families, thus avoiding a potential school dropout.

Through classes, collective interdisciplinary activities and the support offered by the social team, it is possible to observe aspects that impact the lives of students, allowing monitoring and a close relationship between the team and the families, intervening and supporting whenever necessary, with the aim of maintaining the link with the project and, consequently, with the educational process.

In 2021, with the return to face-to-face classes, students received a reading kit containing books donated by the Lima Barreto Library to encourage reading and the creation of a personal library.

The force brought by these children and their families, such as the bond developed with Redes da Maré, with education and with the other training processes in which they are inserted, is perceived through participation in other projects and actions of the institution, such as the Young Reading Club and Heroes Against Dengue, through the return of these students in the High School Preparatory Course and, later, in the Pre-College Course.

Regarding the project itself, the perspective is to continue and enhance this work, through:

• continuous processes of professional qualification of teachers, through pedagogical training that discuss topics that cross the classroom.

production of articles that present the work developed.

improvement of the spaces and methodologies used by the project and the entire structure necessary to carry out the proposed activities, whether in person or remotely.

development of teaching material for the course by the project's teachers.

FORMER STUDENTS

"I like the classes and the development of the teachers. I was very sad when this pandemic arrived and the Preparatory stopped, but then I was happy when it came back with online classes. It was a little difficult, but then I got used to it. In the Preparatory, the teachers are very nice and fun, and they also help me when I have any difficulties or questions about the subject."

Esther Ferreira, 12, student of the class of 2021

"I really like the Preparatory and the teachers, because they want to teach us to write better, to learn the rules of writing, to know that math is important for our lives and that reading books is not boring, because reading makes you write better. I'm glad Prep gave virtual classes; you guys didn't give up on us. The teachers are so much fun!"

Deborah Ferreira, 12, student of the Class of 2021

"The Preparatory taught me things that I still haven't learned in school, the course was an activity that occupied my afternoons with lessons that went beyond what public schools teach, such as racial issues, interpreting songs we hear in our territory, citizenship, rights of children and adolescents and the history of Maré."

Luis Fernando Viana Ferreira, 12, student of the class of 2021

TEACHERS

"One of the challenges is to demystify this idea of mathematics and make classes interesting, so during classes they are encouraged to research information, expose ideas, debating and creating. This discovery process has favored autonomous students' learning, with the use of technology and active methodologies, such as platforms designed for the creation of personalized activities, in a gamified model."

Bruna Coutinho, 31, Mathematics teacher

"Living together in the classroom is always based on respect and trust. I always try to be friends with my students, I give them space to talk and exchange experiences. They love to talk about a little bit of everything. I believe that this relationship is built like this. To pass millions of contents without first knowing them and getting closer to each other is not enough. Then everything flows normally and more smoothly."

Patrícia Martinez, 45, Portuguese teacher
