FACILITY

Open since 2009, the Maré Arts Center - CAM is a facility for the dissemination of arts and culture for residents of the region, attracting people from different parts of the city and even from other countries. Thus, it became a meeting space, where art and culture manifest themselves in the most varied ways.

The Arts Center houses the Free Dance School of Maré, a partnership with choreographer Lia Rodrigues, who collaborated in the creation and design of the space. In addition to the School, dance and theater shows, classes, workshops, exhibitions, conversation circles, musical shows, as well as artistic, cultural and socio-political movements are offered to the public, free of charge.

PARTNERS OF THE MARÉ ARTS CENTER

Lia Rodrigues Cia de Dança - Lia Rodrigues is a strategic partner in the idealization and construction of the Maré Arts Center, where she carries out her artistic residency. The choreographer established a relationship with Maré in 2004 and, since 2009, she started to occupy the facility even before its renovations. It is at the Maré Arts Center that Lia Rodrigues Cia de Danças rehearses daily, creates and presents her shows, such as: Pororoca (2009), Piracema (2011), Pindorama (2013), Para que o céu não caia (2016), Furia (2019) and Encantado (2021). Learn more about the company's work on Instagram and on the website.

Theater in Communities - Theater in Communities is an extension project of the Department of Theater Education of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) that promotes the production of knowledge in theater and artistic and pedagogical practice, encouraged by the meeting between the Theater School (UNIRIO) and the residents of Maré. Its main action is the performance of students of the Theater course as mentors of groups formed by children, adolescents and adults in different parts of Maré. The artistic results that are always presented at the end of each school year make up the project 'Maré de Espetaculos'. In addition to the classes and presentations of plays built by graduates and students, Theater in Communities produces several presentations by theater groups and collectives at Maré Arts Center. Enrollment for the group is made in person at Maré Arts Center and is open to young people aged between 7 and 17. Find out more about the project here.

Institute Yoga at Maré - It was created in August 2015 and its main objective is to promote a culture of peace and improve the physical and mental health of the residents of Complexo da Maré. From an inclusive perspective, differentiated yoga classes are offered, adapted to the needs and expectations of each one, as well as classes within Maré and in different spaces of the city. The project has about 40 students at Maré Arts Center, of different age groups. Classes are offered free of charge by teacher Ana Olívia, twice a week. Registration for classes at Maré Arts Center is made from Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 5 pm. More information here.

Cia Marginal - The company was created in 2006, at the meeting between Redes da Maré and a group of young people led by theater director and filmmaker Isabel Penoni. More than a decade later, she has a recognized career in the contemporary art scene in Rio, with a trajectory marked by the political commitment to take favela art to the rest of the world. Know more about the company.

Grupo Atiro - The theater group emerged in 2007, from extension workshops of Cia Marginal in partnership with Redes da Maré, in a process of researching their memories about their experiences in the territory, giving rise to the first show “She can be in you” (2013), about the challenges of having peace in a scenario permeated by armed confrontations. Next, the young people created an allegory about the Northeastern myths of a family that leaves the Northeast in search of an enchanted place called Maré, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. “Vai” (2014) circulated in 16 communities in Maré, including opening shows by Cia Marginal. In 2016, the group stopped being a workshop and created the name Grupo Atiro. Find out more about the group here.

CAM DURING THE PANDEMIC

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the Maré Arts Center became a humanitarian aid center and the space was fundamental for the development of different action fronts of the 'Maré says NO to coronavirus' campaign. CAM team and staff from different sectors of Redes da Maré, with the support of volunteers, started to occupy the place, performing service to the public in the search for data and verification in the system that was created to monitor the registered people. They were also responsible for receiving and organizing donations.

Fundraising for the renovation of the Maré Arts Center's roof

At that time, an international campaign was also carried out for the general renovation of the roof and the installation of a solar energy system, with the support of an entire network of partners and friends. In addition to promoting art and culture in the territory of Maré, CAM also aims to become a reference in sustainability and accessibility for the city of Rio de Janeiro.

In 2021, the CAM team held classes remotely, received meetings with the axes and started monitoring the families that entered the food security action database.

The team also held a series of lives with artists from Maré, and from other favelas and states to share their work. Some artists from collectives had a partnership with the space or were already students of a project offered by the Maré Arts Center.

HISTORY AND PURPOSE

For more than a decade, the Maré Arts Center - CAM has been, daily, deconstructing borders and democratically guaranteeing access to art and culture for residents of the favelas of Maré and the entire city.

CAM is a living space, for meeting and exchanging with the most varied audiences. A space dreamed up to promote experiences of training, creation and dissemination of the arts.

Breaking stereotypes by exposing different issues of peripheral territories and affirming, through dance, theater, music and other artistic languages, the creative and cultural power of the people of Maré.
