PROJECT

Redes da Maré and Fundação Roberto Marinho, with support and funding from Instituto Somos and Instituto Humanize, offer Elementary and High School classes of Youth and Adults Education through the Telecourse methodology. The project has already offered more than 20 classes in several favelas in Maré, such as Nova Holanda, Vila dos Pinheiros, Rubens Vaz and Conjunto Esperança, impacting the return of more than 500 students in their school careers.

Telecourse was created in the 1970s by Fundação Roberto Marinho with the goal of increasing access to quality education through TV. In the 1990s, a face-to-face methodology was developed and, since 1995, over one and a half million students have graduated from public schools in 12 Brazilian states. In Rio de Janeiro, to serve youths and adults who are out of school, Fundação Roberto Marinho has a school that adopts the Telecourse and has units at Jacaré, Manguinhos, Santa Marta, Porto da Pedra (São Gonçalo), Rio Comprido, Jacarepaguá, in addition to Maré.

CURRENTLY

The project started in 2018, with over 500 registered students who resumed their school trajectories after years of absence from the classrooms. In 2019, over 400 students graduated from Elementary and High School. During the first year of the pandemic, in 2020, the team reinforced its work in maintaining ties with Elementary School graduates and in 2021 new class registrations returned.

Currently, the project serves 2 classes of Youth and Adults Education, through the Telecourse methodology, at the Residents' Associations of Conjunto Esperança and Rubens Vaz. The other classes have already formed.

At Conjunto Esperança residents’ association, classes take place in the afternoon, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm, and at Rubens Vaz residents’ association, in the evening, from 7pm to 10pm.

ABOUT THE PROJECT METHODOLOGY:

"I am responsible for all subjects. The students attend teleclasses and together we discuss the subjects, build knowledge and activities always in accordance with Paulo Freire's philosophy. I always try to stay by the student's side, listening to them all the time, seeking dialogue and sensitive listening in practice.”

Ana Claudia Araújo, teacher at EJA since 2018, today teaches in High School classes at Conjunto Esperança and Rubens Vaz Residents' Associations.

ABOUT EJA’S SUBJECTS:

"In practice, sometimes I couldn't study because of my mental situation and the lack of internet at home, which is not always good. Having finished elementary school, for me, was very important, because it was a situation that really bothered me. It was a unique experience to see what I can do! It was gratifying to know that the institution provided me this opportunity. Education is very important, because with knowledge some people treat you better and nobody takes you away."

Cristina Martins, 50, a resident of Nova Holanda and graduated in the Elementary School class of 2021

"EJA is a project that I really like being part of. It brings a new breath to so many people who for many years did not know how they would pass this school stage. There are many stories of overcoming and the dedication of the students shows how they believe in the project and believe in their own potential. It's a project that, besides seeing each person as a unique being, provides a really cool exchange among all involved."

Aline Araújo da Silva, a resident of Vila do Pinheiro, has been a teacher at EJA for 4 years and in the Complementary Pedagogy project Not One Less for 5 years.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC:

"The big challenge has been to keep the engagement of the students who faced a long period of distance learning, many using only their cell phones. From that, the overcoming came from hearing their proposals, what they wanted to study, what they would like to learn. By listening to the group, it was possible to think of viable strategies so that they would not abandon their studies in this final stretch, since most of the high school class has been enrolled in school since 2018. Reconstructing a life project for many passes through a classroom like the ones we have at EJA."

Vitor Félix, a resident of Parque Maré who has been working in EJA since 2018.
