The Pedagogical Complementation was one of the first initiatives of Redes da Maré, starting in the 90’s carrying out activities in a small classroom that offered support to the literacy of children, mainly for those who studied at the Municipal School Nova Holanda. In the 2000’s, the work was carried out within the Petrobras Young Apprentice Program in Maré, in public schools in the region.
The project creates a safe environment for children to express their experiences, their knowledge and the topics that interest them, reading about the world. The work is based on a decolonial, non-patriarchal approach that respects diversity, based on art education activities and pedagogies of affection and cooperation. There are literature activities, pedagogical games and formal activities planned together with the class teacher at school. In addition to activities in the classroom, Pedagogical Complementation also develops socio-cultural activities in partnership with the school and other institutions, carrying out classes-tours in cinemas, theaters and visits to exhibitions.
Currently, classes take place at Escola Municipal Genival Pereira de Albuquerque and the school recommends a group of children between 8 and 12 years old in an initial literacy phase. Previously, the project assisted CIEP Hélio Smidt students.
With the intention of contributing to expand reflections and practices on an educational development project in Maré, there are also forums, seminars and surveys with events and publications created by education professionals and by the institution.

Publications
Following the commitment to systematically disseminate ideas, practices, methodologies and research, the project participated in two publications produced by Redes da Maré during the period in which it was part of the Petrobras Young Apprentice Program in Maré, focusing on the theoretical and methodological foundation for literacy in a socio- constructivist perspective in favelas and peripheries.
In 2020, the girls and mothers of the project also participated in the survey Every Girl at School, in partnership with Malala Fund, on the impacts of the pandemic on this group’s education in Maré. Access it here.
Class Formation
The school team suggests classes with children between 8 and 12 years old, in the initial literacy phase, to study the formation of the class. Next, meetings are held with the teachers of these children to plan the work. Registrations are made by the families from an invitation to a meeting, and in the same way contact with the family is initiated.
Workshops
Workshops, with 1h30min, are held twice a week, focusing on literacy and art education based on the demands of children and articulated to education in human rights. Cultural activities are also held in Maré and in other neighborhoods of the city.
Socio-pedagogical follow-up
There is a planning of monthly meetings with families and case studies with the school team and the social support network that offers support at the school itself, as well as an active search, when necessary.
