CAMPANHA

“WE ARE FROM MARÉ. WE HAVE RIGHTS!" is a mobilization campaign and seeks to strengthen the protagonism of the population of Maré in the fight for their basic rights, such as public security, which directly dialogues with the right to life.

The 3rd edition of the campaign (2021) is the result of the experience of the Axis Public Security and Access to Justice team in daily life and in the dialogue with residents through their perceptions since the first campaign, held in 2012, and involves a series of permanent actions in the territory of Maré and in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

In December 2021, on the International Human Rights Day, Redes da Maré begins to tour the 16 favelas of Maré to deliver, door-to-door in almost 50,000 households, informative brochures on rights and what can or cannot be done during a police operation, the conditions in which this actions can and should take place, as well as a map of the entire support and protection network offered against violence and violations; the opening of an exhibition that will be installed in different public spaces in Maré; the display of a video, with residents of Maré answering the question: what is your dream?

The answers for this question, which was asked from tents spread across the territory of Maré and documented on video, are alarming! For this population, what should be a guaranteed basic right, such as going to school, to the health center or to work, moving around the city, going to college, being able to retire or having their own house, appears in most speeches like a dream! In other words, violence, whether caused by a police operation or an armed confrontation, interrupts dreams. The everyday struggle and violations put everything down in seconds, but the damage is permanent.

OUR ACTIONS

“In the year that International Human Rights Day completes its 73rd anniversary, we residents of Maré do not have our basic rights guaranteed. It is unacceptable that favela residents dream of rights or that our rights are dreams.”

Shyrlei Rosendo, axis coordinator

The more than 140,000 residents of the 16 favelas in Maré want to be respected like everyone else in the city, in any neighborhood, in order to dream of broad horizons and to have their basic rights guaranteed.

A traveling exhibition in several favelas of Maré brings the dreams printed alongside the faces of residents, as well as large posters spread across the city.

2ND NOTEBOOK TALKING ABOUT PUBLIC SECURITY AT MARÉ

Believing in the strength of the residents' leading role in the strategic discussion on public security, Redes da Maré also launches the second edition of the booklet of articles “Talking about Public Security at Maré - Life in the Favela: Reports on Daily Life in the Middle of Armed Violence”, which brings together seven articles by residents of Maré on Racism, Youth, War on Drugs and Armed Violence in Favelas.
