In the last Maré Population Census, almost 129,000 people were interviewed in their homes by a field team of 96 people. In total, more than 120 residents received training and participated in this work. The multidisciplinary team is made up of geographers, economists, statisticians, social scientists, social workers, geoprocessing technicians, cartography technicians, in addition to a partnership with the residents' associations of the 16 favelas in Maré.

Immigration - 35,808 (25.8%) inhabitants are from Northeast, a more expressive concentration compared to the percentage of Northeasterners in the metropolitan population of Rio de Janeiro in general (only 9% are from the Northeast).

More than half of the population is made up of young people - 51.9% are under 30 years old. On the other hand, the population aged 60 years and over reaches only 7.4% of the residents of Maré, a consequence of the difficult living conditions of its residents throughout history.

Maré population size - 135,989 residents in 2010, which represents more than 9% of the population residing in favelas in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. It is also considered the 9th most populous neighborhood in the city.
Presence of more women - There are more women than men among its residents: 70,878 women (51%) and 67,948 men (48.9%), and 44.4% of the sole or main chiefs of the household are women over 15 years old.
3 most populous favelas - Parque União (20,567 - 14.8%), Vila dos Pinheiros (15,600 - 11.2%) and Nova Holanda (13,799 - 9.9%).

44 public schools, offering from kindergarten to high school;
In the population aged 15 and over, the percentage of non-literate people is 6.0%, but it is still far from meaning that literacy in Maré is solved;

Regarding the schooling of Maré residents, only 25,031 (18%) completed high school and 22.6% dropped out; 25,866 (37.6%) of the population completed elementary school; and 11,145 (8.01%) never attended school.
