With the beginning of the pandemic and the need to develop actions to contain the contamination of the coronavirus, Redes da Maré established an important partnership with Fiocruz, a renowned public health institution in the country, creating a health surveillance project for favelas, called Health Connection. After 15 weeks of implementing the project, Maré reduced mortality in the territory by 86%, causing the region, which had one of the worst rates in the city, to reach a mortality rate lower than the national average.

 

This experience was responsible for a rich production of data and monitoring of the pandemic in Maré. From this base, it was possible to propose a research on the effectiveness of the vaccine, called ‘Vacina Maré’. With the vaccines intended for the study, it was possible to advance the official vaccination schedule and in 4 days complete the vaccination of the adult population of Maré, ensuring the the first vaccination cycle for the entire population of Maré.

To make this whole process possible, Redes da Maré made available to the projects all its knowledge of articulation, mobilization, production of knowledge and political advocacy, a fundamental part of its work methodology. In this way, a strong articulation in the field of health was consolidated, which led the institution to create a new axis dedicated to the theme: the Right to Health axis.

The projects started during the pandemic were joined by others that the institution was already developing in conjunction with the health area, such as the Normal Space, a project that operates based on the practice of harm reduction and with support for families in a situation of food insecurity.

THE NEW AXIS, THEREFORE, FOLLOWS THE METHODOLOGY OF REDES DA MARÉ AND WORKS WITH THE CONCEPT OF THE RIGHT TO HEALTH IN ITS BROADEST SENSE, THAT IS, UNDERSTANDING THE RESIDENTS' PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING AND NOT JUST THE ABSENCE OF DISEASE. IN THIS SENSE, THE AXIS' PROJECTS AND ACTIONS STRIVE TO MAKE MARÉ A REFERENCE FOR A HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE FAVELA TERRITORY.
